Sifu Wong also became interested in Chow Family Praying Mantis, and before studying Tai Chi, he began studying this style. Sifu Wong personally knows all of the teachers of that style that are in England, so it was his friends that taught it to him. He has been studying Chow Family Praying Mantis for about 10 years. When Sifu Wong started training In Martial Arts, he had always suffered with bad health. Even through the years before he began studying Tai Chi and Praying Mantis, his health had suffered from injuries he obtained while doing other Martial Arts. When Sifu Wong started studying Tai Chi Chuan, his body became fitter and more able to cope with illnesses that surrounded him, because it regulated and massaged his internal organs. Tai Chi also played a great part in his relaxation, and also made his body much more flexible. When Sifu Wong started studying Praying Mantis he discovered another benefit: Power, he obtained power in his arms, and indeed, every other part of his body, through the techniques and rigorous training he had to undergo. Praying Mantis style builds up all the 'external' parts of the body, i.e. bones, muscles, tendons, skin, enabling the user to, in effect, have a 'shield'.
Sifu Wong also learnt the 'Bamboo Forest Temple' Southern Praying Mantis from Grandmaster Yang Yin's top student. Master Law. Master Law learnt 'mantis' style from GrandmasteF-Yang Yin for over 20 years. Master Law is now retired from teaching Kung-fu and is now a restaurant owner. In Chinese circles Grandmaster Yang Yin is a celebrity, he is a household name. Now he is also retired and owns and runs an Alternative Medicine Surgery in China Town.
'Bamboo Forest Temple' Masters, and indeed many other Chinese Masters, would not accept Westerners as their students. Sifu Wong thought this to be a great shame, so for this reason and because he thought he would put all his various Martial Arts' training to good use, he decided to found his own style, to be the ultimate in health and self-defence. Another reason he founded his own style was because he was concerned with peoples morality. He felt that several teachers were concerned only with the commercial aspect of teaching a Martial Art, and not at all with the physical and mental welfare of their students. He says "if a teacher shows himself to be immoral, selfish and dishonest, then his students can only be the same". Students can only learn what their Masters teach. That is why in his style he teaches Chinese Philosophy, because he feels that if you deeply contemplate it, you will be a happy, more generous and more honest person. You will discover your own meaning of life, therefore you will be a more settled and balanced person.
Sifu Wong used to run a business in Peterborough, teaching Combined Tai Chi Mantis only at weekends, but in 1986, because of public demand, and his love of it, he decided to start teaching his style professionally. Sifu Wong's master. Master Law, had a great understanding that Sifu Wong needed to teach his own style, to which he is deeply grateful. He has been teaching in Peterborough for three years and before that he taught in London for two.
