Combat: What about good old fashioned hard work?
Simon Wong: Chinese old people always talk about fate, luck,
Feng Shui, doing good things and working hard. They say hard work
must be the best thing, but look at people working in the third
world making tennis rackets for example, how much do they earn,
yet what do the rackets sell for here? They are working like dogs
for a few pounds and if you're born into a rich family you don't
have to work, right? Luck - even the Queen has bad luck. Windsor
Castle burnt down.
Combat: Having Prince Edward as a son?
Simon Wong: You said that not me! But bad luck applies to
everyone. The right time right and the right place - that's Feng
Shui! It's about putting yourself into the best position. If Feng
Shui was simply magic then I would be a billionaire right now. I
wouldn't have to do the Feng Shui for other people! Feng shui is
common sense too. It's about science not spirituality.
Combat: On a different note, you have a long musical background
- tell us about that.
Simon Wong: I learnt to play music when I was 17, I asked
my brother to teach me and he said 'no', so I learnt the hard way
through a book. After a few months I could play one song, and that's
how I picked it up. I played the guitar and liked folk songs, like
Simon and Garfunkel. That's why I changed my name to Simon. I also
listened to Chinese music and now I use technology to combine the
various influences, ambient , drum and bass. If you are a true artist
you will easily flow with everything. Eventually I will make my
own movies too. Good films also have a pattern to follow to mix,
just like music. Some types of music make people feel very violent
but here the feeling is really nice, the feel depends on the artist.
If you have your own philosophy then you can dip into different
styles, I do all my own mixing and write all my own music, and in
April we are set to release our first album. Sometimes when I try
to write it doesn't come out, it can take months and sometimes I
can complete a song in a day.
Combat: How important is music in your life?
Simon Wong: Music is not important in my life. Music is
fun, but I don't want to be considered for just one thing, life
is a whole, music is just a part of it. As I said before, form is
emptiness, emptiness is form!
