Combat: Simon, tell us about the development of your own
Yellow Dragon Fist Kung Fu.
Simon Wong: Some students seem to spend a few years studying
this and that, then they mix it up and call it a new style. I call
it the "chop suey" style. For me it was different. I spent
over ten years and a lot of money, buying the secrets from different
masters. This also involved dedicated training for many years, but
I was also testing them, you have to really experience it. A lot
of styles had the physical but not the mental side, or vice versa,
so I combined all the things I had experienced into my own style.
The physical, spiritual and mental, combining the best aspects of
all that I had experienced.
Combat: Many "Masters" advertise their art as
the best. What is your feeling on this?
Simon Wong: I don't want to advertise that way. A master
should be humble. Look at water - it is so powerful, in philosophy
terms you get everything and nothing. If you achieve enlightenment
you achieve emptiness, you have nothing but also everything.
Combat: Many people do not accept the concept of "internal"
strength or chi power.
Simon Wong: They are sceptical because of their own experiences.
A lot of people prefer the physical when they are young because
it is easier. When you go to a gym you can see that the (weights)
machine is there, you can feel the "pump" building up
the muscle and you can see the results. When Western people go to
China for the first time and see acupuncture they say "this
is crap!" and don't believe it. Why? because they cannot see
the chi tunnel. They only see the muscles and tendons.
Combat : Are you saying that in the West we have a seeing
is believing philosophy?
Simon Wong: Yes ,but it is not only Western people, a lot
of Chinese people are the same. You can feel the wind blowing, but
you cannot touch it, like chi, you can feel it when you do acupunture
to the pressure points, you can feel the electricity there, but
you cannot see it. Many people only see the material things and
to them that is reality. When they have to spend more time looking
more deeply they don't have the time. When I was young I remember
reading an interview with Bruce Lee and the magazine asked him what
he thought about Chi Kung and he said he was too busy with his physical
work .
